What Documents Do You Need to Prove Your Eligibility?

One document is enough, and it must show the name of someone in your household.

To prove program enrollment, submit one of the following, dated within the last 6 months and showing active benefits:
1. A current benefit award letter
2. A benefit renewal letter or benefit statement
To prove household income, submit one of the following, showing household member count and dollar amounts:
1. Your most recent federal, state, or tribal tax return
2. A Social Security benefit statement
3. A VA benefit statement
4. A retirement or pension benefit statement
Not accepted: pay stubs.
Approved eligibility stays valid for 15 months. After that, you’ll re-verify with a current document.

Government Assistance Eligibility for Seniors, Students, Veterans, People with Disabilities, and Low-Income Families

The same two paths — program enrollment or household income — cover every group we serve, including job seekers between benefits. Here’s how each group most often qualifies.

Seniors

Seniors most often qualify through Social Security Retirement, SSI, or Medicaid. If you receive any of these, one benefit statement makes you eligible for a low-cost computer and cheap home internet. For plan details written for older adults, see our guide to cheap internet for seniors.

Students & Families

Students and families qualify through the National School Lunch Program, Federal Pell Grants, Cal Grants, or Head Start. A financial aid award letter or school lunch approval letter works as proof. College students can start with our guide to affordable internet for college students.

Veterans

Veterans qualify through VA benefits, including VA pension and disability compensation. A VA benefit statement serves as proof of both program enrollment and income. For connectivity options built around veteran benefits, see cheap internet for veterans.

People with disabilities

People with disabilities most often qualify through SSDI, SSI, or Medicaid. A Social Security benefit statement dated within the last 6 months is all the proof you need for a low-cost laptop and internet service. Our guide to cheap internet for people with disabilities covers the best plan options.

Job seekers and low-income families

Between jobs or getting by on a tight budget? Most low-income families already qualify through SNAP, TANF, WIC, or Section 8. If your household isn’t enrolled in any program, the 200% income limits above still apply — and an affordable laptop plus cheap internet makes the job search itself easier.

One Verification Covers Devices and Internet

Qualify once, use it for both. The same approved verification unlocks refurbished laptops, desktops, and tablets from our low-cost device catalog, plus cheap 4G/5G internet — $14.99 per month with a one-time hotspot purchase ($80.98), or a $24.99-per-month bundle that includes the hotspot. No credit check required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a laptop with EBT?

Yes. Having an EBT card means you receive SNAP benefits, which is a qualifying government assistance program. Upload a SNAP award letter or benefit statement dated within the last 6 months when you create your Human-I-T account, and you can order a low-cost laptop and cheap internet.

Can I get a computer if I'm on SNAP or food stamps?

Yes — SNAP, food stamps, and CalFresh are the same qualifying program under different names. One current benefit letter proves your eligibility for an affordable computer and internet service. Create your account, upload the letter, and shop the device catalog.

Does Medicaid qualify me for a low-cost laptop?

Yes. Medicaid — including Medi-Cal in California and the Healthy Michigan Plan — is one of the 13 qualifying government assistance programs. Submit a Medicaid award or renewal letter dated within the last 6 months as your proof.

Can I qualify with SSI or SSDI?

Yes. SSI, SSDI, and Social Security Retirement all qualify, and your Social Security benefit statement counts as proof. If you’re not on Social Security but live on a fixed income, you can still qualify under the 200% Federal Poverty Level income limits.

Can I get cheap internet through government assistance programs?

Yes. The same verification that qualifies you for a device unlocks internet service: $14.99 per month with a one-time hotspot purchase, or a $24.99-per-month bundle with the hotspot included. No credit check. Creating a Human-I-T account is the only way to access internet service.

What if I'm not enrolled in any government assistance program?

You can still qualify by income. If your household’s gross annual income is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level — $31,920 for one person or $66,000 for a family of four in 2026 — you’re eligible. Not sure where you land? Call (888) 391-7249.

Are Human-I-T's laptops free or low-cost?

Most Human-I-T devices are low-cost rather than free: refurbished laptops and desktops priced well below retail, which lets us serve every low-income household that qualifies instead of a lucky few. The eligibility rules on this page are the same either way.

How often do I need to re-verify my eligibility?

Every 15 months. Your verification stays active for that window, and when it lapses you submit one new document — dated within the last 6 months — to keep ordering devices or maintain internet service.
