Every week we like to look back at everything we have read to bring you more information about the digital divide, digital inclusion and technology trends from around the web. Today on The Weekly Plug we look at how     human-I-T was recently nominated for the Classy Awards, the impact of the broadband privacy vote, and closing the internet gender gap.

The 2017 Classy Awards

Big news! We have recently been recognized as a finalist in The 2017 Classy Awards as one of the most innovative nonprofits & social enterprises. We’re very honored to be a finalists in the top 100 and look forward to the results this year in Boston.

Broadband Privacy Vote

The US senate recently voted this past week to allow internet service providers to share your internet search history. This has caused a concern among a large number of citizens, organizations and companies. According to The Verge, “the privacy rules, passed last year by the FCC, required internet providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T to get each customer’s permission before sharing personal information like which websites they visit. But internet providers want to be able to sell that data and use it to target ads”

Closing The Internet Gender Gap

Overall, closing the digital divide has made progress in recent years, but one area that’s still a primary focus is the internet gender gap. This particularly focuses on how unequal internet access is for women. In this recent article on Medium, author Micheala Smiley notes that women are “50% less likely to be connect to the internet than men.” Furthermore, “the #internet is a building block on which many solutions can be built. Therefore, #digitalinclusion — the idea that the Internet is accessible, welcoming and safe for all — is essential so that all people, women included, can both contribute to and also reap the benefits of the open Web.”
