Whether you are upgrading from Windows 7 or moving your servers to the Cloud, it is essential to make sure that your company’s E-Waste is handled professionally, responsibly, and ethically.

Here are five ways to make sure you are getting the most out of your e-waste:

1) Be Environmentally Responsible

We throw away the equivalent of 800 laptops every second. Often, E-Waste is sent to landfills or incinerated in the open air, where dioxins seep into the atmosphere and toxic debris contaminate the soil and groundwater. Occasionally, E-Waste is dismantled for resale parts and the remaining shredded into waste that is shipped to landfills of developing countries. For these reasons, it is essential to confirm that your E-Waste is disposed of properly and responsibly.

2) Help People in Need

Why recycle when you can repurpose? By donating technology, you can help local low-income families, veterans, and people with disabilities. Reuse helps eliminate the amount of energy spent on recycling devices, the amount of energy spent on creating new items, and the amount of waste generated by packaging and shipping new items. Best of all, reusing devices gives less fortunate individuals access to technology and opportunity in the digital age allowing them to access education, employment opportunities, financial inclusion, and social services.

3) Destroy Your Data Correctly

If you are donating devices to others, it is vital to make sure you are properly sanitizing your data. As you know, it’s not enough to delete, erase, or reformat drives. We suggest using providers that use comprehensive wiping methods like NIST 800-88 to not only destroy any recoverable data but also re-scan the drive and provide verification that the data was destroyed. The NIST 800-88 wiping specifications are also an industry standard that is compliant with global data sanitization laws across many industries such as health care providers, financial institutions, and the U.S. military.

4) Get a Tax Deduction

By donating unwanted assets to a 501(c)3 nonprofit, you get a tax deduction of the fair market value of all donations! For specific advice, please consult with a certified tax professional or reference IRS publication 561 for specific legal guidance.

5) Help Your Company’s Image

Be a community hero! Consumers care more and more about companies that not only provide a good product or service but are also committed to social and environmental change. By donating your electronics for reuse, you can share the impact you are creating with your customers and generate more brand loyalty.
