KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Which is better depends on fit: your child’s school, grade, typing needs, and testing rules.
- For 2026-27, a personal iPad can run the College Board’s Bluebook app if the school allows personal devices for AP Exams, SAT School Day, and the PSAT. A personal Chromebook cannot, because Bluebook runs on Chromebooks only when the school manages them.
- Some districts give young children iPads and older students Chromebooks, as Thompson School District in Colorado does.
- An iPad can handle Google Classroom and Google Docs work, but it is not a guaranteed Chromebook replacement.
- As of October 2026, the iPad (A16) starts at $449 and a keyboard case adds $139.99 to $249. New 8 GB Chromebooks at Best Buy ran from about $216 to about $775.
- Check update life before you buy. Google counts a Chromebook’s 10 years of updates from the platform release date, not the purchase date (the Auto Update Expiration, or AUE, date). An iPad should be on Apple’s iPadOS 27 list (standard iPad: 9th generation or newer).
This guide compares iPad and Chromebook for K-12 students and younger children on school compatibility, form factor, cost, update lifespan, parental controls, durability, and refurbished buying. It is for parents, guardians, and relatives who have narrowed the choice to these two but have not yet checked what the school requires. It does not recommend specific models.

What does the school actually require, and how do I check before I buy?
Check the school first. A personal Chromebook cannot run the College Board’s Bluebook testing app, but a personal iPad can, if the school allows personal devices. State tests from Pearson and DRC also set minimum operating system versions.
College Board Bluebook (SAT, PSAT, AP)
According to the College Board’s Approved Devices page, Bluebook runs on Windows or Mac computers, iPads, and school-managed Chromebooks, but not personal Chromebooks. On Chromebooks it runs in kiosk mode, which works only on devices managed through the Google Workspace Admin console (Chromebook Requirements). For 2026-27, the new tech requirements set ChromeOS 144 as the minimum. iPads can be personal or school-managed, and fully digital AP Exams require an external keyboard (iPad Requirements).
Pearson TestNav and DRC INSIGHT (state tests)
| Test | Managed device required? | OS minimum (2026-27) | Hardware minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| College Board Bluebook | Chromebooks: yes. iPads: personal or school-managed | ChromeOS 144; iPadOS 18 | iPad: 16 GB storage, 8-inch screen. Chromebook: 1 GB free storage |
| Pearson TestNav | Not stated for Chromebooks; some tests run in kiosk mode | ChromeOS Stable above 145 or LTS 144; iPadOS 18.x or 26.x | 4 GB RAM (3 GB minimum), 9.5-inch screen |
| DRC INSIGHT | Chromebooks: unmanaged ChromeOS is not supported | ChromeOS 144 from October 8, 2026; iPads must get an Apple-supported OS | Touch and non-touch Chromebooks supported |
Sources: Pearson, DRC bulletin, and DRC requirements (February 2026).
Microsoft 365 and app gaps
According to Microsoft Support, Chromebooks get only the Microsoft 365 web apps. On iPad, Microsoft’s mobile app licensing page limits free editing to screens of 10.1 inches or less, so every base iPad needs a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan. Microsoft Education says students with an eligible school email can get Office 365 A1 free, with an A1 editing limit of 10.9 inches. Apple lists the iPad (A16) as 11 inches (10.86 inches measured diagonally), so ask whether A1 editing works on it.
Three questions to ask the school
The College Board’s Prepare Your Device page says the school decides whether personal devices are allowed for AP Exams, SAT School Day, and the PSAT. Ask:
- Which platform does the district issue for my child’s grade?
- Are personal devices allowed for state tests and College Board tests?
- Which required apps are not browser-based?
Laptop or tablet: which form factor matches my child’s age and grade?
School plans differ by district, so treat these as examples.
Per Thompson School District’s Device Information page, students get iPads in kindergarten and 1st grade, Chromebooks in blended 1st/2nd and 2nd grade, and a new Chromebook in 3rd grade.
Other districts are pulling back for the youngest grades:
- Bellingham (Washington): According to the district’s September 2026 update and work group memo, kindergarten classrooms no longer have iPad carts, and first grade i-Ready use is limited to 10 minutes per day.
- Battle Ground (Washington): According to its 2026-27 Chromebook page, kindergarten through second grade classrooms no longer have assigned Chromebook carts.
Two peer-reviewed 2026 preschool studies look at letter learning. Kalchhauser-Cunha et al. found no significant difference between tablet and paper. Ghanamah found that handwriting, on paper or with a stylus on a tablet, led to better letter recognition and naming than typing.
For older students, the keyboard matters more: fully digital AP Exams on an iPad require an external keyboard (College Board).
Can an iPad fully replace a Chromebook for schoolwork?
Not as a guaranteed substitute. An iPad can complete and turn in Google Classroom assignments with the Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps installed, but it falls short when a school relies on Chrome extensions, computer-only Docs features, or full Microsoft 365 editing. A Chromebook has its own gaps.
Where an iPad works
According to Google’s Classroom mobile app FAQ, students can view, complete, and turn in assignments on iOS. Google’s Docs help says students can create and edit Google and Word files on iPad. Apple Support says Stage Manager works on the iPad 8th generation and later, and iPadOS 26 adds Windowed Apps that can be placed side by side.
Where an iPad falls short
- Computer-only Docs features: According to Google’s Crop and adjust images help, cropping an image in Google Docs and adjusting image colors in Docs or Slides need a computer.
- Chrome extensions: Google’s Chrome Web Store Help lists no iPad install path.
- Keyboard cost: a keyboard adds $139.99 to $249 (see the cost section).
Where a Chromebook works and falls short
Chrome Web Store extensions can be installed on Chromebooks, and Google Family Link lets parents allow or block them. The gaps: Microsoft 365 is web apps only (Microsoft), the Seesaw mobile app runs on iOS 16.6 and newer but Chromebook users work in the browser (Seesaw Help Center), and Google says pre-2021 Chromebooks that opt in to extended updates may not support some features and services (Google Auto Update policy).
Neither is a safe default for college
Temple University ITS says Chromebooks, iPads, and Android tablets “are still not a replacement for a PC or Mac” (Temple ITS). The University of Houston says Chromebooks “may not meet the requirements for proctored exams” (UH). Check college requirements separately.
Is an iPad enough for a kid (or relative) who only does email, video calls, and streaming?
Yes, for most households. Google Meet asks for a dual-core processor and 2 GB of memory, and Zoom, also listed by Caltech IMSS, asks for a dual-core 2 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 1.2 to 1.8 Mbps for HD video. A Chromebook at the 4 GB RAM floor meets both; check an iPad model’s specs against Zoom’s list.
Front cameras
| iPad (A16) | Education Chromebooks (Lenovo 300e / 500e Yoga Gen 4) | |
|---|---|---|
| Front camera | 12MP landscape Center Stage camera, 1080p video | 720p (300e); 1080p or 720p (500e) |
Both Lenovo models have a privacy shutter. Sources: Apple and Lenovo PSREF for the 300e and 500e.
How low can the specs go?
A practical Chromebook floor for K-12 and light use is 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, the minimum Temple ITS lists for Chromebooks. Some districts go lower: Davis Joint Unified School District lists 4 GB of RAM and 16 GB for student-provided Chromebooks.
Ease of use and accessibility
We found no study comparing which is easier for young children or older relatives, so we do not rank them. ChromeOS includes built-in accessibility tools, according to Google’s Chromebook accessibility help: the ChromeVox screen reader (Google help), Select-to-speak, dictation, and full-screen and docked magnifiers. We did not compare iPadOS accessibility tools.
Is an iPad with a keyboard or a Chromebook the better value over three to four years?
At the prices we checked, a new Chromebook costs less up front than an iPad plus a keyboard case. Total cost over three to four years depends on repairs and protection plans, and we found no data on how often each device breaks. The iPad works with Apple Pencil (USB-C, $79).
What an equipped iPad costs (as of October 2026)
- iPad (A16): from $449 (Apple)
- Keyboard: $249 for the Magic Keyboard Folio (Apple) or $139.99 for the Logitech Rugged Folio (Logitech)
- Apple Pencil (USB-C): $79 (Apple)
- Kid case: OtterBox Kids EasyGrab, $69.95 regular, $48.97 on sale October 9, 2026 (OtterBox)
The iPad plus a keyboard case comes to $588.99 to $698.
What a Chromebook costs (as of October 2026)
- New Chromebooks with 8 GB of RAM ran from about $216 to about $775 at Best Buy on October 9, 2026. Several in the $289 to $449 range were “Techtober” sale prices that Best Buy said ended October 11 (Best Buy).
- Chromebook Plus models have at least 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage (Google).
For more low-price options, see our guide to affordable student computers.
What breakage costs
- iPad (A16): According to Apple’s iPad repair pricing, out-of-warranty “other damage” repair costs $379 as of October 2026, and Apple has no screen-only price for this iPad. With AppleCare+, fees are $29 for screen damage and $99 for other accidental damage. Replacement means a new iPad, from $449.
- Chromebook: District price lists show a screen repair at $80 to $140 and a keyboard at $50 to $60 (Upper St. Clair School District, Western Placer USD). District protection plans cost about $28 to $40 a year (Central Dauphin School District, Western Placer). District replacement values run about $300 to $450 (Western Placer, Upper St. Clair, Beaverton School District). At retail, Best Buy’s Accidental Geek Squad Protection ran $59.99 to $119.99 for one year and $129.99 to $229.99 for four years across three Chromebook listings on October 9, 2026 (Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3, HP 14-inch Chromebook Plus, Acer Chromebook Plus 516), at each device’s listed price, which included sale prices.
Resale value
Apple Trade In accepts many Apple and third-party devices, and Apple’s business program names iPad; its consumer page does not. Neither Apple nor the Google Store names Chromebooks.
How do I estimate my own three-to-four-year cost?
Add the device, one case, one keyboard if needed, and one protection plan or one repair. We do not give a single total, because how often a device breaks depends on the child. If a tablet fits your child’s school and grade, you can browse refurbished tablets for students.
How long will each device keep getting software updates?
A Chromebook has a published end date, its Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date, counted from its hardware platform’s release. An iPad has no published end date, so you judge it from Apple’s yearly compatibility lists.
Chromebooks: the AUE date
According to Google’s Auto Update policy, ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates from the platform release date. After the final update, education and enterprise policies “may not work as intended.” The date follows the hardware platform, so models differ widely: on Google’s list, the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 runs to June 2032, the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 to June 2033, and the HP Chromebook Plus 14 to June 2035.
To check a Chromebook’s AUE date on the device, per Google Chromebook Help:
- Select the time at the bottom right.
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Read the “Update schedule” section.
We recommend buying a Chromebook with at least about 3 years of AUE remaining. Temple University ITS sets a lower floor: at least two years of auto-update support (Temple ITS).
iPads: Apple’s compatibility lists
According to Apple’s About Apple software updates, Apple publishes no fixed number of years of support. Apple’s lists show the pattern instead:
| iPad model | Newest iPadOS it can run |
|---|---|
| iPad 7th generation | iPadOS 18 |
| iPad 8th generation | iPadOS 26 |
| iPad 9th generation or newer | iPadOS 27 (current) |
Sources: Apple’s iPadOS 18, 26, and 27 lists. The table covers the standard iPad; other families have their own cutoffs. Apple’s vintage and obsolete products policy says repair parts last at least 5 years, and up to 7, after Apple stops selling a product.
Why updates matter for testing
DRC INSIGHT System Requirements (February 2026) treats iPads that no longer get an Apple-supported OS as unsupported (as of its February 2026 edition) and recommends replacing Chromebooks that reach AUE within the school year.
If you lean toward a Chromebook, see refurbished Chromebooks and laptops with warranty.
Which is easier to childproof, and which survives a child’s daily handling?
Both offer time limits and web filters. Apple Screen Time needs a parent Apple device, while Google Family Link can be managed from an iPhone or an Android phone. We found no published data showing that either device breaks less often in schools.
Parental controls compared
| Criterion | Apple Screen Time (iPad) | Google Family Link (Chromebook) |
|---|---|---|
| Devices managed | iPhone and iPad in Family Sharing | Android devices and Chromebooks on ChromeOS 71+; no location reporting on Chromebooks |
| Time limits | Time Allowances by app category, with age-based defaults | Daily limits (applied to each device separately); per-app limits on ChromeOS 83+ |
| Schedules | Screen Time Schedules for school and after-school, weekdays and weekends | Downtime and School time are documented for Android; Google’s schedule page does not mention Chromebooks |
| Web filtering | Limit Adult Websites or Approved Websites Only; Ask to Browse on by default under 13 | Approved-sites-only option, explicit-site blocking, extension control, Incognito turned off |
| What the parent needs | Parent’s own iPhone or iPad (setup also shown on Mac) in Family Sharing; every family device on version 27 for the new controls | Family Link app on Android or iPhone; school (Google Workspace for Education) accounts cannot be supervised |
Sources: Apple’s parental controls (September 14, 2026) and Child Safety guide; Google Family Link help on devices, setup, screen time, app limits, schedules, and Chrome.
How durable is each device?
- iPad: protection comes from an add-on case. OtterBox says its Defender Series case survives “2X as many drops as military standard (MIL-STD-810G 516.6),” and Logitech says its Rugged Folio “exceeds military standard tests.” These are maker claims.
- Chromebook: we did not find a comparable maker durability claim to cite.
Should I buy a refurbished iPad or Chromebook, and what do I check first?
Yes, refurbished works for either device if you check three things before checkout: remaining update life, the warranty, and the return window. For Chromebooks, look up the exact model’s AUE date yourself.
Apple Certified Refurbished
Apple’s refurbished program gives refurbished iPads a new battery and outer shell and a one-year limited warranty. Its returns policy gives 14 days to return.
Chromebook AUE and iPad model checks
Look up the exact Chromebook model on Google’s AUE list before you pay, because the date follows the hardware platform, not the listing. On the device, use the five steps above.
Battery and warranty guarantees by channel (as of October 2026)
- Back Market: non-phone devices ship with at least 85% of original battery capacity, and laptop orders include a charger (battery policy, accessories policy).
- Amazon Renewed: at least 80% battery capacity (90% on Premium) (Amazon Renewed Guarantee).
- eBay Certified Refurbished: no published battery minimum; two-year warranty serviced by Allstate (eBay program warranty).
For an iPad, go to Settings, then General, then About. Apple’s Identify your iPad model page maps model numbers to models. A2602 is the iPad 9th generation, the oldest standard iPad on the iPadOS 27 list. For more, read what to look for when buying a refurbished tablet.
What Human-I-T includes
Human-I-T applies one published standard to every refurbished device it sells, including tablets and Chromebooks. According to Human-I-T’s store and warranty and returns page, as of August 2026:
- Preparation: NIST 800-88 storage wipe, fresh operating system, 25-point component certification, and a cosmetic grade.
- Warranty, returns, and support: a 1-year hardware warranty starting the day the order arrives, a 60-day return window on eligible purchases (returns policy) with free return shipping, and one year of tech support with every computer purchase (product page FAQ).
Human-I-T does not publish a battery-health percentage, so ask about battery condition. Its “Get it Done” Chromebook guarantees an AUE of 2027 or later (store listing). A 2027 date could leave only a few months of updates, less than the 3-year guidance above, so check the exact device’s AUE date before relying on it for several school years.
Once your device arrives, see our guide to caring for a refurbished laptop.

Decision framework: iPad or Chromebook?
Once you have checked your school’s rules, use this table. If a Chromebook fits, see refurbished Chromebooks and laptops with warranty.
| Decision variable | Choose iPad when… | Choose Chromebook when… |
|---|---|---|
| Child’s grade band | Kindergarten and grade 1 in districts such as Thompson, which issues iPads there (Bellingham has cut kindergarten iPad use). Grade 2 varies by district | Grade 3 and up in districts such as Thompson, which issues a new Chromebook in 3rd grade |
| School platform and testing | The school allows personal devices for Bluebook and TestNav, uses Seesaw or iPad-first apps, or issues iPads | The school uses Google Workspace for Education, requires Chrome extensions, or will manage the device for state testing |
| Typing and keyboard need | Occasional typing; budget $140-$250 for a keyboard case if essays start | Regular typing from day one; keyboard and trackpad built in on laptop-style models |
| Three-to-four-year cost exposure | You accept a higher starting price plus case, keyboard, and stylus costs, and may buy AppleCare+ | You want the lowest up-front cost (new Chromebooks from about $216 at Best Buy on October 9, 2026) |
| Parental controls setup | Parent owns an iPhone or iPad in Family Sharing and wants Apple Screen Time | Parent uses Android or wants Google Family Link; school accounts cannot be supervised |
| Minimum update runway | Model on the iPadOS 27 list (standard iPad: 9th generation or newer) | We recommend at least about 3 years of AUE remaining; check the exact model on Google’s list |
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for students, an iPad or a Chromebook?
It depends on the school and grade. A Chromebook fits if the school issues or manages Chromebooks, your child types every day, or the school needs Chrome extensions. An iPad fits if your child is in the youngest grades, needs a stylus, or uses iPad-first apps.
Can my kid take the SAT on a personal Chromebook?
No. Bluebook runs on Chromebooks only when the school manages them. A personal iPad can run it with iPadOS 18 or later, 16 GB of storage, and an 8-inch or larger screen, if the school allows personal devices.
Is an iPad or a Chromebook better for a kindergartner?
It depends on the district. Thompson School District in Colorado issues iPads in kindergarten and first grade, but Bellingham and Battle Ground in Washington cut device use for the youngest grades in 2026-27. Check what your child’s school uses.
Does Google Classroom work on an iPad?
Yes, for completing and turning in assignments with the Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps installed. Cropping images in Docs and installing Chrome extensions still need a computer.
Which has better battery life for school, an iPad or a Chromebook?
We found no independent battery test. Apple markets the iPad’s “all-day battery life” (Apple), and San Mateo Union High School District says its school Chromebooks deliver “up to 8 hours” (SMUHSD).
How do I know how long a used Chromebook will get updates?
Check its AUE date: on the device, go to Settings, About ChromeOS, Additional details, Update schedule, or look up the exact model on Google’s Auto Update list. We recommend at least about 3 years remaining.
Bottom line
Start with the school, then the grade, then the budget. A Chromebook with a long AUE date fits if the school issues or manages Chromebooks and your child types every day. An iPad on the iPadOS 27 list fits if your child is in the youngest grades, needs a stylus, or uses iPad-first apps. A Chromebook costs less up front at the prices we checked, but total cost depends on repairs and protection. For discounted pricing or a general starting point, see Human-I-T’s affordable devices for students and families.
